A Safer World?

With the death of Osama bin Laden there is much debate about whether or not the world is a safer place. Some argue that bin Laden's death will help to curb terrorist attacks. Others disagree with the idea that killing bin Laden will mean fewer terrorist attacks.

Obama Calls World ‘Safer’ After Pakistan Raid

Then post a brief response to the question above. You may also want to discuss the following questions:

Is the world safer after the killing of Osama bin Laden?
Was the killing of bin Laden justified?
How are German and US responses to terrorism different/similar?

  1. I think that the death of Usama brings great joy to the American people, but I feel the more that we praise are selves the more mad al qaeda will become. So depending on the way the American people deal with the death of U.B.L.. I also think that for a limited amount of time the United States should be on alert, simply for the fact that al qaeda will want to show that they are still a strong group.

  2. I don't think the world is a safer place now that Osama bin Laden is dead. There is a great possibility that Al Qaeda will retaliate against America in the very near future. Like the article said, Al Qaeda's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahri is in hiding and possibly contemplating a retaliation for Osama's death. Obama stated that the world is now a safer place now that Osama is dead, but I think that we just caused a bigger problem than we originally started with. I do think, however, that Osama bin Laden's death was completely and totally justified. A life for a life is how it should be done, but I believe that we could have gone around it a better way than we did.

  3. The death of bin Laden is a great victory for the US. However, it was an extremely risky move. As stated in the article, Obama said, "No Americans were harmed" (NY Times 5/2/11). Yes, this is true. No Americans were harmed....yet! By killing the leader of Al Qaeda, America has put every citizen of the US at risk! I'm not saying that he shouldn't be dead-but invading Pakistan and murdering him in his home was the wrong thing to do. Obama though of using "other options that might have been less risky...but used commandos instead to minimize collateral damage" (NY Times 5/2/11). So now we have a terrorist group who has already hurt America once pissed off. Sounds super safe to me. Our army does a great job, but America isn't as safe as it seems. Right now, we are super vulnerable and weak.
Another point to look at is, what if the mission had failed? How screwed would we be? We're already in danger, just imagine what would have happened if bin Laden hadn't been inside the house or if the soldiers invading would have been caught? Then what would we do? Obama would have been disgraced and hated for a failed plan, messing up his political career. Then think of us citizens. Al Qaeda would have been mad that we tried to kill bin Laden, and took their rage out on us. Who knows what they're planning right now...

  4. The world is much safer with Osama dead. I have been waiting for this day my entire life. If it weren't for all the caves he has been hiding in he would have been dead a long time a go. He is a bad, bad man and a coward. I completely agree with Obama's decision to kill this terrorist. He would have continued to kill people if we did not take action in killing him. Sure terrorism will always exist, but if we continue to kill terrorist one at a time we will be fine.

  5. In my opinion, the death of Osama did nothing. When 9/11 happend we were pissed at the Al Qaeda, but they did what they thought was right. Now look at them. We killed there leader 'cause "we thought it was right", but they're looking at us the same way we looked at them after 9/11. Many people are saying that this act will solve all our problems. but it won't. All we did was dig ourselfs deeper into our graves. The death of Osama isn't going to stop the war. There will always be war. Yes killing Osama was justified but it will not help. I hear quite a few people in this room saying that it's the best thing we have ever done. But they have no idea. Al Qaeda are terrorists to us, but now we are terrorists to them. All that is going to happen through this act is the Al Qaeda will try to get back at us in some way, then we will get back at them in a wors way, and so on. Obama made his choice and it was a foolish one. He is screwing us all over. I have looked at all this from both perspectives, that's the pest way to do it, and with how it looks from both those sides we are trading places with Al Qaeda and becoming the terrorists. If Osama had sent a teem in to kill Obama we would be pissed at them. So they have every right to be pissed at us. So with the end of this I say yes we did something just, but was it right?

  6. The world is safer with the death of Osama bin Laden.
His death is justified, after the mass murdering he has caused.
I am not familiar with the German's response to terrorism, but I doubt it's as awesome as the US's response.
